What is a Specialty Pharmacy?
The Cystic Fibrosis Pharmacy and Freedom Pharmacy are both “specialty” pharmacies. Specialty pharmacies often go above and beyond the services of a community retail pharmacy. They offer a selection of specialty drugs prescribed to treat complex and chronic conditions. Specialty pharmacies also provide their patients with education, quality clinical services, guidance with cost containment and medication review management for their patients during treatment.
Also, patients have access to 24/7 clinical pharmacists to ensure their total care. Specialty pharmacies are continually improving the quality of their patient care.
The correct adherence to a patient’s drug regimen is critical to enhanced quality-of-life in patients with chronic conditions. Also, many specialty medications are under strict FDA guidelines and may require special handling, including temperature-controlled shipment, etc.
In addition, specialty pharmacies have an ongoing relationship with clinical trial scientists and pharmaceutical manufacturers to ensure their patients have access to the most up-to-date specialty drugs. Manufacturers only work with the specialty pharmacies they specifically select.
And the specialty pharmacy’s patient care representatives share with their patients any available manufacturers’ copay assistance and/or financial assistance programs since costly specialty medications may otherwise be unaffordable. Plus, they work to guide patients to other nonprofit organizations offering financial assistance with costly medications and treatments.
